How to Create a Minimalist Pattern

Creating a minimalist pattern is a fun challenge that won’t take much time. It’s all about scanning your space and noting where the clutter is, and then finding a simple way to eliminate it from your life, whether that means getting rid of it or making it less visible.

Minimalism is a design trend that centers around living in an uncluttered, flexible environment. It’s rooted in the rise of social media, which has made people want their homes and rooms to reflect their personalities. It also has roots in philosophy: in the Buddhist notion of Wabi-Sabia, which celebrates the beauty and imperfection of nature.

What is a minimalist design?

Minimalist design focuses on stripping away a product’s or service’s non-essential elements until only the essential elements are left. While this streamlining approach may seem simple, it can have huge implications for user experience. When designing the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo went all-in on minimalism, resulting in an intuitive, easy-to-use, yet highly versatile console.

The color scheme mostly used in minimalistic designs is:

The color scheme mostly used in minimalistic designs is white, black, gray, and (occasionally) blue. These three colors and red are the most prevalent in such designs, especially on the web.

How to Design a Minimalist Pattern

As a graphic designer and illustrator, one of my favorite ways to practice design is to create patterns. They are fun and challenging and can quickly rack up hours (and hours, and hours) of creative endeavors (and still not get everything done). A design challenge I have recently been exploring is designing minimalist patterns. Minimalism, as a design philosophy, is about stripping down elements to their most basic form. It requires being clean and clutter-free.

Prepare the Document

You can incorporate graphics, charts, and tables into your documents, notes, and reports. To create a graphic or chart, first ensure that the document, notes, or report is formatted properly. Then insert the object where you want it to appear. After inserting the object, you can select the Text Tool (T) to make the text in the graphic stand out. You can also select the Shape Tool (S) to define the shape of the graphic. Use these formatting tools to make the graphic stand out.

Draw the Circle Elements

The circle is one of the most popular shape types in web design. It’s often used to symbolize completeness, unity, or eternity. In web design, the circle background is used to create balance and is often used for backgrounds that stretch across the entire page or full-body page backgrounds. Alternatively, you might find that some designers (like the ones from this Web Design Cardiff agency perhaps) also tend to use the circle for buttons and icons.

Draw the Diamond Shape and Crescent Moon

“Draw the Diamond Shape” is a worksheet that will test your knowledge of the diamond shape. The diamond shape is one of the eight basic shapes, requiring similar skills to the other seven, such as applying symmetry and perspective.

You can also try the crescent moon drawing technique.

Draw the Eye Shape

Drawing the eye is the easiest part. However, getting it to look how you want it to is another story. Drawing its shape is tricky, but it doesn’t have to be.

Eye shapes come in a variety of styles. Like:

  • The almond shape has a straight outside line and a slightly curved bottom.
  • The teardrop shape has curved outside lines, and the bottom is straight.
  • The circle shape is circular all around.
  • The square shape is fairly square all around.
  • The triangle shape is triangular on the bottom.
  • The diamond shape is the widest at the bottom and tapers down to the top.

Minimalism is the philosophy that “less is more.” Minimalist patterns contain only what is necessary to communicate your message effectively. You need only include design elements that make your pattern both effective and visually appealing.
